TX-8 is an enzyme preparation of alpha amylase.
In the Textile industry, yarn is coated with starch prior to weaving in order to protect the yarn from damage. However, before the woven material can be dyed or bleached, the starch must be removed. TX-8 breaks down the starch so that it can be wash away making for a more consistent product.
In the Pulp/Paper industry, paper is often sized using starch. This is done to protect it from mechanical damage during manufacture, and to enhance the stiffness of the finished product. Natural unprocessed starch slurries are too viscous to be used in paper sizing. Alpha-amylase is used to partially degrade the starch in order to yield a product of appropriate viscosity.
